History

The vineyard was planted in 2006 with cold hardy grape varieties: Marquette and Louise Swenson.  In 2007 we planted additional Marquette as well as St. Croix and LaCrescent.  We extended the vineyard again in 2010 in order to plant more of the successful Marquette grape.

Sandy and stony loams of the Stockbridge, Nellis and Hinesburg series dominate the soils of this vineyard. The Stockbridge and Nellis soils are deep, well drained loams formed in glacial till derived from limestone, calcareous shale, schist, phyllite, and quartzite. Their high natural fertility balances the nutrient leaching that occurs in sandy soils. The Hinesburg series is similar in composition and drainage, but somewhat lower in fertility.

History

Our first harvest from the Meach Cove site was in the fall of 2002. Originally this planting included the University of Illinois hybrid Traminette as well as the Austrian vinifera, Zweigelt. Ultimately, our VT winters proved too harsh for these vines and we replaced them with Vidal Blanc.

Vineyard Specifics

Our Meach Cove Vineyard is the least sloping of all our sites. Its constant north and south prevailing winds and its close proximity to Lake Champlain provide air movement, frost protection, and rapid drying after rain. Rows are oriented north-south for maximum sunlight and ripening. The underlying soil is deep, stony loam in the Georgia series. It originated in glacial till derived from limestone and calcareous shale.

Vineyard Specifics

The Mt. Philo Vineyard is situated on sloping land facing predominantly west. Like our other sites, vines are planted north-south. The soil is composed of Stockbridge, Nellis and Hinesburg series which are all deep, well drained, sandy loams. Some areas of this acreage have underground springs leading to the need for tile drainage spaced at forty-foot intervals thought the largest section of the vineyard.
