An Entertaining Idea

Thursday, March 31

This is the second best use for a wine glass that I can think of... check out these little paper shades that turn your wine glass into a glowing table light.  Put a tea light in a wine glass and pop one of these shades on top.  Group several on your table for a warm, atmospheric glow.  For sale in our tasting room - $12 for a package of 20 shades.

Warm glow achieved, time to eat. Here's a recipe for lovely pears poached in Riesling with cinnamon and vanilla bean.  It's easy and elegant.

Pears Poached in Riesling

2 ripe Bosc or Bartlett pears Shelburne Vineyard Riesling or other lightly sweet white wine 1 cup sugar cinnamon stick vanilla bean fresh whipped cream

Peel pears leaving stem intact.  Cut in half and core.

Combine 1/2 bottle Riesling, sugar, cinnamon stick and vanilla bean in saucepan.   Bring to a boil and add pears.  Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, or until tender but not falling apart.

Remove pears, cinnamon stick and vanilla bean.  Simmer syrup till thickened, about 30 minutes more, then refrigerate until ready to serve.

Serve pears in syrup with vanilla bean scented fresh whipped cream.  (add the vanilla bean pulp and 2 Tbsp sugar to the cream when whipping).  Serve with SV Riesling.
